SK Telecom has signed an MOU with China Unicom to work closely in a number of key areas, including 5G technology, international roaming, platform, and startup ecosystem. This will also see SK and China Unicom exploring new growth areas and business opportunities together.
As part of the plan, the two operators will be sharing information and conduct joint studies to promote standardization and commercialization of 5G. In addition, they will work together to launch competitive roaming services given the active tourism exchange between Korea and China. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, a total of 6.13 million Chinese visited Korea, and 4.18 million Koreans visited China in 2014.
The two operators will also collaborate to share information on their platform-related products/services and OTT services, and work together to create market opportunities. At the sametime, SK Telecom and China Unicom agreed to cooperate in building a startup ecosystem to create a cooperative venture incubator program to jointly conduct the overall process of incubation, from search for venture items to their market introduction.
