South Korean largest operator, SK Telecom is deploying Ciena’s  5430 Packet-Optical Platform as it upgrades its nationwide infrastructure that runs on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to deliver wireless services as well as enhanced wireline business and consumer broadband offerings. SK Telecom’s business and customers will benefit from extremely high-availability, high-capacity and flexible services that are essential for the cloud and other high-bandwidth, web-scale applications, such as those required for streaming video, said Ciena.

According to Ciena, its 5430 platform leverages WaveLogic 3 coherent optics and the latest high density 15 Tb/s switching capabilities to underpin service delivery and will be seamlessly integrated into Ciena's OneControl to simplify network management and provide visibility and control across SK Telecom’s infrastructure. Additionally, Ciena’s OneConnect control plane technology, which integrates SDH, OTN and high-capacity Ethernet, will enable SK Telecom to seamlessly align services across the entire SK Telecom Group so it can operate efficiently as a single entity.

With Ciena’s converged packet-optical and control plane software platforms, SK Telecom can deliver high-availability, resilient Ethernet services to handle surging demand for cloud computing, HD video and LTE advanced mobile services. In addition, network scalability enables SK Telecom to rapidly respond to unpredictable, changing end-user needs.
