Korea's second largest Mobile Operator, KT is joining forces with Nokia Networks to launch a new IoT lab to provide IoT-related technical expertise and knowledge to small and medium-sized partner companies. With the initiative, KT and Nokia Networks aim to implement the world’s first LTE-M (LTE for machine-to-machine communications) field trial by Q4 2015. The trial network will be based on virtual environment to enable interworking and network verification on Nokia Networks’ LTE infrastructure.

According to Nokia Networks, the collaboration underlines both companies’ commitment to foster a “Programmable World” through the convergence of IT and Telecommunications. LTE-M is a new LTE variant and pre-5G technology that is to be integrated into 5G. The technology enables battery life of devices to be extended beyond 10 years, while delivering 15 dB additional coverage and incuring minimal costs, and will be a key enabler for connecting the billions of sensors and machines to the IoT network, claims Nokia Networks.

Yun Kyoung-Lim, Head of Future Convergence Business Office at KT
Together with Nokia Networks, we are leveraging upon the convergence of IT and Telecommunications to hasten our transformation into an ICT powerhouse. Furthermore, this lab is a strong iteration of our vision to become the number one player in Korea’s IoT market. Our efforts are aimed at encouraging greater participation by domestic companies, which are a crucial factor in driving the change towards a creative IoT-based economy.

Andrew Cope, Head of Korea at Nokia Networks
Executing upon an agreement signed at MWC15, Nokia Networks and KT have taken another step forward on an exciting journey that will culminate in the creation of the ‘Programmable World’ in Korea and beyond. After showcasing the world’s first LTE-M* for interconnection of sensors, we have now created Korea’s first IoT lab – a solid proof-point of our commitment to standardize LTE-M and create a strong and sustainable IoT ecosystem.
