Indonesia's leading service provider, Indosat and Japan's NTT DOCOMO have signed an MoU for joint testing for the embedded SIM (eSIM) Prove of Concept (PoC) for seamless M2M devices connectivity across the Operators' networks. The PoC, in partnership with global SIM provider, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), is planned to confirm the connection and the change in SIM profile between the Operators' M2M platforms.
The eSIM technology allows SIMs that are embedded into the M2M device at the point of manufacture to be later remotely linked to a network operator. This network operator profile can be subsequently changed or modified over the air. The interoperability between different M2M platforms serves corporate customers by giving them wider choices to connect around the world with greater cost efficiency. As such, the remotely provisioned eSIM technology is expected to support customers and accelerate the M2M market growth worldwide. Both Indosat and DOCOMO are members of CONEXUS Mobile Alliance, which recently established an M2M task force dedicated to conducting M2M services available across member countries – addressing issues and concerns on cost optimization, local customer support, better usability and borderless solutions with emerging technologies. DOCOMO also has contributed to the GSMA eSIM specification in December 2013, and announced the launch of the commercial eSIM equipment for M2M devices in June last year.
