Broadcom, a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, this week announced it has licensed MIFARE, a widely deployed protocol for contactless ticketing, transportation and access applications to support a growing set of near field communication (NFC) and related payment applications in mobile phones, tablets and wearable devices.

According to Broadcom, the steady increase in adoption of NFC has expanded opportunities for companies in ensuring interoperability across multiple platforms, protocols and standards. Broadcom said that its objective is to enable original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to integrate a wide array of applications that deliver a simplified and consolidated user experience for payments, access and contactless ticketing.
