South Korea's third-largest mobile carrier, LG Uplus has launched a new technology, dubbed as 'Cloud Digital Unit ( Cloud DU)' that helps to improve 4G network blind spots, according to Korea Times. The new technology that was developed by Chinese network equipment maker Huaweiis expected to bridge the gap that is caused by interference between base stations, an effect of using different spectrums in a tri-band LTE-Advanced network. LG Uplus launched its LTE-advanced carrier aggregation (CA) using three different spectrums ― 800 MHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz last year to offer a peak speed of 300Mb/s.

According to Korea Times, the Cloud DU connects digital information processing units in base stations through the cloud network to support CA technologies and the Cooperative Multi-Point (CoMP).

Lee Sang-min, LG Uplus Service Development Division
We have introduced the Cloud DU technology to improve service quality in the blind spots of our base stations. It will follow other next-generation network technologies such as the tri-band LTE-A and Uplink Cooperative Multi-Point (CoMP) that use different LTE spectrums at the same time. We will continue to seek leadership in the LTE technologies as well as in the core technologies that comprise the fifth-generation network.
