Operators looking for better means to optimize their network may find the recent successful Openet - Smith Micro Software interoperability tests of great interest as it now enables intelligent Wi-Fi offloading for mobile data subscribers, making it easier for operators to make the best use of their networks. When subscribers are automatically connected to available Wi-Fi, it not only enables subscribers to make use of cheaper data rates or even free data available at the Hotspots, it also allows Operators to manage congestion on the mobile networks by directing traffic to the fixed network. On the users end, with these intelligent offloading, subscribers need not manually search and connect to the available connections. Via this partnership, Openet, a global leader of real-time transaction management software and services and Smith Micro Software, Inc. will be assisting Operators not only to enhance the use of their the WiFi networks, but will also facilitate Operators to roll-out additional service plans, derive better subscriber insights, and generate new revenue opportunities.

“Openet’s Interaction Gateway together with Smith Micro’s NetWise solution represents the first proven, standard-based coordination of core network and device-based policies,” said Openet CTO Joe Hogan. “This solution provides intelligent network selection using subscriber context and the state of network resources, allowing the device to switch back and forth between cellular and Wi-Fi based on operator defined criteria”

“Interest in ANDSF is increasing rapidly – not just from mobile operators, but also from Wi-Fi providers and aggregators, fixed line operators and enterprises that see it as a means to improve Quality of Experience (QoE) and gain additional business value from wireless investments,” said David Sperling, CTO, Smith Micro Software.  “Our NetWise I/O Toolkit fills an important gap in the commercialization of ANDSF by providing a reference implementation on mobile devices that facilitates testing and validation of the standard interfaces.  We’re excited to work with Openet to bring the benefits of intelligent policy management to market via their Interaction Gateway and our NetWise solution.”
