With the small cell solutions already growing in the market, Operators can now increase the quality of their mobile connections, both voice and data in places which are plagued with coverage issues. Crowded places and indoors will typically suffer from poor connection quality due to congestion as well as internal barriers. Small cells which complement the existing macro network, address this by augmenting the quality of mobile signal for increased quality of connection and enhanced user experience.
The recent deployment of Alcatel-Lucent's 'plug-and-play' femtocell solution for Telefónica in Germany is another small cell rollout in the country. The deployment is expected to boost 3G mobile broadband access and quality for Telefónica customers especially for enterprises and outdoor locations in high density areas. According to Alcatel-Lucent, Telefónica is marketing the modems as “Signal Box by O2“, which is about the size of a typical Wi-Fi base station, and gets linked with a cable to any Internet connection and a power supply. Home-offices, campus areas, shopping malls and hot-spot areas, where the traditional macro cell deployment is limited today will be some of the major locations to benefit from the solution.
