Telefonica is deploying the Cisco ASR 9000 (aggregation router), ASR 901 and ASR 903 as part of its Evolved Programmable Network (EPN) to deliver enhanced high-speed mobile backhaul services in its Latin American markets. These platforms will provide cell-site backhaul services and enable mobile operators to better support data-intensive services required by consumers and businesses.

Among the long list of deployments by Telefonica include the deployment of the ASR 9000 and ASR 903 in Brazil, and the ASR 9000 in Argentina and Chile, both to provide metro and backhaul services. In addition to this, the ASR 9000, ASR 901 and ASR 903 are deployed in Mexico to support Telefonica's LTE backhaul services.

According to Cisco, the Cisco ASR 9000 series routers will help Telefonica address the growth in its networks via a converged infrastructure that optimizes service delivery with flexibility, robust IPv6 support, and Carrier Ethernet capabilities. Cisco added that the platform's use of the Cisco IOS XR modular software operating system will simplify the company's network operations and create network resiliency.

Brendan Gibbs, Vice President, Service Provider Routing, Cisco
As we help carriers transform their networks to be more agile, reduce operating costs, and profitably pursue new business models, we're pleased that Telefonica has selected Cisco to serve as the foundation for its Evolved Programmable Network, which will be capable of ushering in a new wave of exciting services and applications.
