WSO2 and Axiata Group have launched WSO2.Telco, a new open source platform for digital enablement. The cloud-ready, API-driven WSO2.Telco platform is designed to empower mobile network operators (MNOs) with an agile collaboration layer with Web-centric APIs for building and leveraging partnerships across the mobile ecosystem. The platform which was debuted at last week's Mobile World Congress (MWC), is built by Axiata’s digital services unit, Axiata Digital Services (ADS) and its Sri Lankan operating company, Dialog Axiata PLC (Dialog).

According to WSO2, the platform can be deployed as an on-premises gateway or as a cloud gateway. The on-premises version provides a one-stop platform for telco integration, identity, API management and integrations to southbound telco services. When the platform is deployed as either a cloud gateway or on the cloud as 'platform as a service' (PaaS), it brings additional capabilities to build a federated telco solution that forms a bigger telco ecosystem involving MNOs, aggregators, partners, application developers, and other cloud gateways. The company added that the WSO2.Telco is GSMA Mobile Connect ready, supporting a range of use cases ranging from billing to advertising, e-money, e-health, e-government and M2M.

Anthony Rodrigo, CIO of Dialog Axiata Group
Two years ago my team started building what is now WSO2.Telco on top of WSO2’s core platform. The decision was simple. Why re-invent the wheel, why pay over the odds to do it? The result: we have dramatically reduced our costs while increasing our agility. In turn, this has opened up myriad business opportunities. Axiata has integrated the whole group in nine months from scratch, and our IT organization can now work as fast as any external partners we want to engage. Better still, our internal teams are now asking for our APIs.

Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder, CEO and chief architect
In today’s connected world, APIs play a pivotal role in enabling telcos to extend relationships with partners and customers across the mobile Internet and drive new business models. Working with Axiata has enabled the creation of a platform specifically designed to support the needs of the telco industry, which significantly reduces the time to launch an API-driven platform into the market and derive value from it. Built on our powerful, award-winning platform, WSO2.Telco provides a compelling solution that is effectively built by telcos for telcos, which will be supported by a dedicated team of telco experts.
