Aptilo Networks, a leading provider of carrier-class systems to manage data services with advanced functions for authentication, policy control and charging, has unveiled Aptilo SMP Wi-Fi Calling, an advanced 3GPP AAA application for the Aptilo Service Management Platform (SMP) to enable carrier-class, next-generation Wi-Fi Calling. The solution creates a highly secure connection between the operator and the user with advanced authentication mechanisms and allows mobile operators to apply policies to the Wi-Fi Calling service, dynamically in real-time, based on information retrieved from multiple sources such as CRM systems and policy management systems (PCRF).

According to Aptilo, as mobile operators have already deployed IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) with Voice-Over-LTE (VoLTE), they can rapidly enable next-generation Wi-Fi Calling by adding the Aptilo Wi-Fi Calling application and a gateway (ePDG) to connect the Wi-Fi Calling service with IMS. Aptilo said that its Wi-Fi Calling solution goes beyond 3GPP standards with innovative features, such as intelligent policy decisions based on input from multiple sources and support for non-SIM devices.

App-based Wi-Fi calling has been around for some time. However, next-generation Wi-Fi Calling with native support in the devices and seamless call transfer between LTE and Wi-Fi is a game-changer for the telecom industry. Aptilo’s next-generation Wi-Fi Calling solution delivers advanced functionalities that carriers need to compete. This type of extended functionality is required in real-world deployments.
