Telstra this morning announced the launch of a new video delivery platform 'Global Media Switch', which allows broadcasters and content creators to schedule, manage and distribute video in real time using Telstra's IP-based network.

Global Media Switch provides customers with codec-level connectivity directly from the originating content source all the way to the broadcast destination.

With the launch, Telstra aims to accommodate the significant transformation that the media landscape is experiencing, by offering greater control over media assets and ‘Codecs as a Service’ through a zero-capex pricing model. According to Telstra, the Global Media Switch can also be combined with Telstra’s Satellite Media Services, which provide access to more than 20 communications satellites for a complete digital media solution. It is now available in global locations via a range of packages and pricing.

The latest offering by Telstra follows its recent acquisation of Ooyala, a video streaming and analytics company that the service provider acquired for US$267-million in August last year. The largest service provider in Australia originally invested US$43 million in Ooyala in January last year to develop its capabilities in video streaming, analytics and monetization. After acquisition by Telstra, Ooyala in October, acquired Videoplaza, a leader in video advertising technology and monetization to further enhance Ooyala's offering and enable the company to tap into the fast-growing video ad market and build out a new business dimension in advertising as more premium video viewing moves away from traditional TV to web and mobile.

With new models of on-demand consumption and audience fragmentation, media companies have had to make some substantial changes to the way they acquire, distribute and manage media assets. In this new era, staying profitable requires fresh thinking and adaptive approaches to technology. With the Global Media Switch web portal, video contributors can take direct control of service booking, scheduling and delivery to broadcasters themselves in a cost effective way, and even advertise content to other media providers to further maximise revenues
