Elisa, the market leader in mobile subscriptions and fixed broadband subscriptions in Finland and Nokia Networks have announced a successful joint live network testing of Centralized RAN under extreme load conditions at the packed Hartwall Arena in Helsinki. According to a statement by Nokia, the solution delivered data uploads 2.5 times faster, while cutting smartphone power consumption by one third. The solution is particularly important for mass events such as hockey games and world-class concerts that attract up to fifteen thousand fans to the Hartwall Arena. During the events, smartphones are heavily used by visitors to take pictures and videos and share their experiences over social networks.

Nokia said that its Centralized RAN eliminates uplink congestion by embracing interference and turning it into useful traffic by leveraging on its smart baseband interworking and liquid cells technologies.

Sami Komulainen, Vice President, Mobile Network Services, Elisa
We continuously search for new ways to improve our services furthermore. Our co-operation with Nokia guarantees fast LTE-network also in big mass events and our customers can share their experiences in social media.

Ari Leppä, head LTE product management, Nokia Networks
The densely populated area of the Hartwall Arena was perfect for trialing specific technology for mass events. Our Centralized RAN helps Elisa build a dense LTE network to deliver maximum capacity and robust services
