Telefónica UK, one of the largest mobile telecommunications providers in the United Kingdom has succesfully conducted a  live network small cell field trial using Intracom Telecom's small-cell backhaul Self Optimizing Network (SON)-capable platform, StreetNode. The pilot deployment took place in Newark-on-Trent in one of the busiest industrial parks in the East Midlands region of the UK as part of Telefónica UK's assessment for ease of small cells deployment.

Intracom Telecom, a global telecommunications system vendor, said that the StreetNode™  software defined operation allowed activation and reconfiguration in the field in Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-MultiPoint (PtMP) mode. According to Intracom, the trial successfully proved that a street lighting contractor who had received minimal training could install and commission a StreetNode™ unit quickly and easily, assisted greatly by the unique auto-alignment feature of StreetNode™.

Intracom added that the deployment could be monitored using an app running on Android Smartphones which connected through Bluetooth with the StreetNode™ and the system was remotely managed via Telefónica UK's Network Management Centre using Intracom Telecom's flexible management platform, uniIMS™.

Steve Brown, Small Cells Trials Manager for Telefónica UK
This was an ideal opportunity to trial the Intracom Telecom StreetNode product for the first time on our live UK mobile network. The units were physically deployed in under 30 minutes at each location and performed well in a challenging environment.

John Tenidis, Marketing Head for Intracom Telecom's wireless solutions portfolio
This was a great opportunity to trial our StreetNode™ with Telefónica UK. StreetNode™ allows operators to deploy street level backhauling by reusing licensed MW frequencies. By combining carrier grade features with intelligent auto-alignment and zero touch commissioning we have developed the most advanced system for street level connectivity.
