PLUMgrid, a leading innovator of virtual network infrastructure for OpenStack clouds, has announced that it has incorporated third party open source SDN functions from partners or community-built open source software modules on its PLUMgrid Platform to provide a single service insertion architecture that simplifies and accelerates the adoption of virtual network services.  PLUMgrid Platform helps enterprises and service providers to create and manage L2-L7 virtual network services.

Leveraging Docker based containers or virtualized machines for service insertion, the PLUMgrid Platform provides a segmented data center environment through Virtual Domains™ to run open source SDN, thus enabling users to develop, test or deploy SDN/NFV rapidly, said PLUMgrid.

According to PLUMgrid, it has validated a number of open source SDN and network functions applications such as OpenContrail, an open source SDN suite based on Apache 2.0 License, providing controller and virtual router services; Quagga, open source routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and IS-IS for Unix based hosts; Bird, an Internet routing daemon, offering IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP and pfSense, an open source firewall and router distribution.

Enterprises and operators, who are building out private clouds, are evaluating open source and proprietary virtual network functions as part of SDN/NFV. With the PLUMgrid Platform, we are offering a common service insertion architecture with containerized Docker architecture for them to develop, integrate, and deploy virtualized network services rapidly.
