During the launch of the Datavenue challenge aimed at spurring the development of new applications for the Internet-of-Things(IoT)/M2M space, Orange said that its Datavenue service platform offers a collaborative platform for players within the IoT space to jointly develop applications, leveraging on the reservoir of big data produced from the growing number of IoT/M2M connected objects. The Datavenue platform will be gathering, storing, combining and securing data from connected objects, anonymized private business data, including that of Orange as operator, and open data. In its statement, Orange said that the platform will be available for third-party developers in 2015 via Orange Partner.

The Datavenue platform by Orange marks service providers' early initiatives to capitalize on the growth within the IoT/M2M segment where connectivity is becoming built-in across an increasing number of end objects that act as information collection and receiving nodes. These devices connect to the cloud platforms, where a large amount of data (big data) is gathered and awaits to be filtered, analysed and transformed into meaningful data that can be used to produce insights and institute real time response that in turn, is transmitted back to the end object. With more manufacturers embedding connectivity across their products and appliances, connectivity services (both Wi-Fi and cellular) and cloud-based software and end-user applications see increased demand. Orange's Datavenue addresses this need by preparing a platform that will power these applications and enable the roll out of various new M2M services and end-user applications.

Orange's Datavenue challenge will see selected participants sharing and staging their ideas and developing prototypes with Orange's support and assistance. Cooking, social interaction and well-being at home; health and well-being at work; city life, transport and energy; shopping; and personal fitness and wellbeing are the 5 areas enlisted for the challenge. As part of the challenge, participants will be developing a prototype of their application leveraging Orange's Datavenue platform along with connected objects and secure and anonymized data from Orange and its partners.

Stéphane Richard, Chief Executive Officer of Orange
Data offers infinite capacity. To invent new services, the imagination and enthusiasm of all should be called upon. That’s why we’re launching an idea contest. And to make this challenge even more ambitious, we’ve brought in several partners. The objective is to give new impetus collectively to connected objects and data mediation.
