PeerApp, the market leader in local content delivery solutions, has released data that shows customers using their Ultraband Content Delivery Network (CDN) are able to cache 96% of iOS 8 download traffic, allowing subscribers to download the update much more quickly.
-
PeerApp said that it has measured apple.com traffic of a sample of customers over the period of September 15th - 21st, and found traffic peaked after the iOS 8 release to over 4 Terabytes per hour -- a rate four times higher than normal traffic peaks of 1 Terabyte per hour.
-
PeerApp claims that users on its UltraBand CDN downloaded the software update 8-12x faster than average by leveraging locally cached version within their service provider.
"The iOS 8 update is just one example -- though a very visible example -- of the dynamic nature of today's Internet and the challenges it places on operators of all types. Large activities like this -- whether known in advance or unpredictable 'viral' events -- create congestion in operators' networks, leading to dissatisfied customers, and higher service call/text/tweet volumes, which must be managed. We are pleased to help our customers avoid that congestion and meet their customers' expectations."
