Procera’s RAN Perspectives Innovates Location Awareness & Subscriber QoE Measurement for Mobile Operators

Procera Networks has recently unveiled the innovative RAN Perspectives, a ground-breaking Subscriber Experience solution for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) that delivers real-time location and RAN Quality of Experience (QoE) awareness that can be leveraged to enhance the mobile broadband experience for consumers. In conjunction with the launch, PCC Mobile Broadband conducted a Q&A with Procera’s VP of Global Marketing, Cam Cullen for more details on the solution.

Q: What are the key technologies at the centre of the RAN Perspective solution?
A : SIM-based applet that feeds RAN QoE metrics into the PacketLogic solution for analytics and enforcement. This applet provides a unique view of the subscriber¹s perspective on their service quality.

Q:  How will the solution assist mobile network operators in addressing challenges coming from increased data traffic on their mobile networks?
A :They can now have a complete picture of RAN+IP quality and ensure that they are investing in their network to solve the true root causes of degraded quality of experience. It will also provide unique insights into how that data is being used in different locations on their network.

Q: How can the use of the device driven network intelligence¹ alleviate issues relating to network congestion and at the same time, improve customer experience especially on 4G LTE networks/services?
A: The network operator can see the root cause of network congestion in each location and solve it based upon the root cause in a way that satisfies the applications that are receiving degraded quality of experience. This real-time location awareness, combined with application intelligence will deliver a higher quality network for mobile subscribers.

Q: What has been the early market response on Procera¹s RAN Perspective?
A: The customer response has been tremendous. Operators have been asking for solutions like this, and have been only given pieces, and not a full solution by vendors. Many say that the combination of real-time location awareness and device signal strength and quality will enable them to have a complete view of who their network is being delivered to their customers.

Q: How will this new solution, especially with its availability as a Software-as-a-Service, help telecom operators save on capital and operational costs?
A: The savings versus probes alone can deliver a huge cost savings to mobile operators. Instead of millions of dollars in CAPEX, the cost will go to less than 10c per subscriber to get the critical quality information from the network. Combined with the ability of the PacketLogic to deliver cost savings and revenue generation, this will result in a strong ROI model for the operator.

Q: How will the location information from RAN Perspective help operators to develop new services in the market?
A: Location-based services offer huge potential for operators. Fixed-mobile substitution to compete with DSL, location-specific services (like sporting event turbo buttons or happy hours), location-based advertising, and application-based offerings based on subscriber usage (Stream your live sporting event for free while at work).

Q: How will this solution in combination with Procera¹s overall solution portfolio, enhance the development and management of new mobile broadband packages?
A: It will work closely with our PacketLogic for mobile operators. The analytics information will be key for our analytics solutions, and our Customer Care Insights solution will now be able to provide RAN information to the customer care team as well.

Q: Where is the solution being trialled or implemented at present?
A: A number of EMEA and APAC operators. We expect more trials to start in the near future.

Q: What are some of the quick wins service providers can expect from the implementation of the solution?
A: Better visibility into their subscribers perception of quality, new service offerings, and better network operations analytics.
