IDEMIA, the global leader in Augmented Identity, on Tuesday announced its partnership with KT to launch its first standalone (SA) 5G USIM card in the Asia-Pacific in support of their new 5G standalone network.

Under this partnership, IDEMIA will supply KT with 5G standalone USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) cards with NFC (near-field communication) function. The 5G standalone USIM provides a higher security for the MNOs (Mobile Network Operator) network subscribers as the cards are specially designed to protect subscribers’ privacy.

Through the USIMs IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) encryption capability, MNO subscribers’ sensitive information such as location of use and network usage habits will be protected as the IMSI numbers of the mobile users are encrypted before they reach the networks via the SIM. It allows the MNO to be in control of its 5G security and protect its credentials. Compliant with privacy regulations around the world and recommended by the Trusted Connectivity Alliance (TCA), the 5G USIM cards are also compatible with 5G non-stand alone (NSA) networks, 4G networks and South Korea’s NFC contactless payment schemes.

Benson Yeo, VP of Mobile Operators, Asia Pacific, IDEMIA
We are always pushing the boundaries of transformation at IDEMIA, and the launch of our eXtra One 5G SA USIM cards in the region for the first time is a testament to that commitment. We have had a long-standing partnership with KT since the 3G era, to power the next generation of mobile networks, and we are proud to join forces once more to deliver this groundbreaking new offering.

Joon-Ho Lee, Device Team Leader, Device Division, KT
It is only a matter of time before 5G becomes the new global communication standard. We partner with IDEMIA to stay ahead of the curve and to ensure that our users’ privacy and credentials are highly protected while they enjoy the benefits of our 5G networks.
