Huawei and Vodafone Germany got together to showcase its enterprise LTE (eLTE)-based broadband communications network and Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) that provides smooth video transmission and seamless live video broadcasting for the Kieler Woche, an annual international sailing event held in Kiel, Germany.

4G-based eLTE broadband trunking solution is used to integrate voice, video and data trunking, as well as multiple-network applications into a converged wireless broadband communication infrastructure.

Using the eLTE technology, distributed base stations were set-up across the race course, enabling live footage of the race to be captured using smart phones and transmitted to the event organizer. Audience can then get a close up view of the event in real time on their mobile phones and tablets using Vodafone Germany’s LTE enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS).

According to Huawei, traditional Wi-Fi networks are unstable at sea and it is difficult for the filming crew to capture footage near the competing boats.

Setting up the Kieler Woche’s broadband communications network was the first application of eLTE in Germany and demonstrated the successful integration of Huawei’s eLTE solution and an operator’s LTE solution. With Vodafone Germany, we have created an example for the ICT industry that will contribute to the development of LTE wireless broadband technology across Europe. The project has provided us and the industry with first-hand experience in the deployment of commercial LTE TDD and LTE FDD hybrid networks."
