Fortumo this week announced that it has launched the mobile operator Three Ireland on its direct carrier billing platform.

Fortumo’s merchants can now collect payments for games, in-app content and digital services from more than 2 million Three subscribers by charging purchases to their postpaid phone bill or prepaid SIM card.

Fortumo will be enabling carrier billing capability with Three Ireland for its merchants through Hosted DCB. Hosted DCB connects merchants with the local mobile operators’ carrier billing platforms while Fortumo manages the checkout flows and localization. This allows merchants to launch carrier billing with minimal development, as one integration enables payment capabilities with all mobile operators in the country.

In Ireland, credit card penetration is at 51% while 81% of people have a smartphone. This means digital content merchants are able to reach new paying users by adopting the payment method. Additional data on the Irish mobile ecosystem can be found from Fortumo’s Western Europe market report.

Taavi Krusell, VP of Telco Partnerships at Fortumo
Smartphones are the main platform driving digital content consumption today and carrier billing provides the best payment experience out of any payment method on mobile devices. We are excited to be adding carrier billing for Three Ireland subscribers as a payment channel for merchants using Fortumo’s platform.
