A consortium of 8 companies led by Cellnex Telecom and the MASMOVIL Group will carry out the deployment of a 5G pilot in the metropolitan area of Barcelona with the aim of testing and developing innovative solutions.

Cellnex Telecom is an independent operator of wireless telecommunications and broadcast infrastructure, while MASMOVIL Group is the fourth largest telecommunications operator in Spain.

The project which will be launched in September will be implemented until December 2022. This consortium has been one of the awardees of the second call for aid for the development of 5G pilots launched at the end of 2019 by Red.es, entity of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation -- under the National Plan 5G.

Through this 5G pilot the consortium will work to test, develop and implement holographic solutions specially designed for the education sector and distance learning; flexible systems for optimizing logistics through autonomous and connected vehicles for Industry 4.0; autonomous, connected and sustainable vehicles for passenger transport in large enclosures – especially fairgrounds – for the improvement of mobility; new remote buying solutions through immersive experiences, specially designed for remote buying in urban markets; improving the control and management of spaces with high influx of people, such as beaches in summer; or the application of this new technology in television broadcasts remotely via mobile devices.

Through this project the consortium will also work on the development of the new generation of mobile networks specially dedicated for the management of citizen security and emergencies in the city of Barcelona, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council and the Urban Guard.

The MASMOVIL Group, as the main operator of the initiative, provides the temporary transfer of the 5G spectrum in the 3.5MHz band necessary for the realization of these use cases, as well as the radio certifications associated with the commissioning of the sites for the execution of the pilot.
