  • Auto-makers are taking huge leaps in the connected car segment, partnering with makers of the car smart-platforms and also service providers to offer internet connection to the car. Auto makers are expecting rapid rise in the demand for 'connected cars' due to the evolving lifestyles of car buyers who have become dependent on the use of data not only for their communication and entertainment needs, but also for their travel and navigation and to assist them in the daily chores and activities.
While some auto-makers are partnering with service providers to offer built-in internet that works on direct connection from the car to the network, others are working with the likes of Apple and the Open Automotive Alliance to enable smartphone users to integrate their devices with the car's touch screen display, allowing users to enjoy the same interface and experience they are used to even when they are on the road.
  • Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars) has recently joined the Open Automotive Alliance, which will enable them to offer Volvo drivers the Google's Android platform on which they can access various applications such as the Google Search, Google Maps, Google Play Music and specially adapted third party applications, such as Spotify. The Open Automotive Alliance is a global alliance of technology and auto industry leaders committed to bringing the Android platform to cars. According to Volvo Cars, its large centre console touch screen display transforms the look and feel of the car’s interior, which will be characterised by their high-tech simplicity and functionality, including features such as the voice and steering wheel controls.
  • Volvo said that the Android Auto will be available on all new Volvo cars based on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), starting with the all-new XC90 to be unveiled soon. Volvo Cars also added that they will include Apple CarPlay™ interoperability in all new models based on the new SPA, so that driver will be able to connect the most widely used smartphone platforms directly to their car’s touch screen display.

Android smartphone users will feel completely at home in a new Volvo. We have created a wholly-integrated user experience in our large portrait-oriented touch screen that takes the in-car mobile device experience to a new level. That, coupled with the obvious driver safety benefits of an advanced voice control system offered by Google, made Android Auto a perfect match for Volvo.
