Cisco on Tuesday announced NTT DOCOMO selected its Network Convergence System routers and segment routing technology for network slicing to help optimize its 5G mobile backhaul in preparation for the commercial service.

Mobile backhaul is the transport network that connects the 5G radio (in the cell tower) to the core network that feeds into the data centers. DOCOMO needed a blueprint for more cost effective transport to meet its future 5G base station facility plan capable of achieving 400 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) speeds.

The transformation to 5G requires a shift to a converged, more programmable SDN architecture capable of delivering all types of services (enterprise, consumer, video, 4G/5G mobile, IoT, etc.), according to Cisco.

Cisco said its converged SDN transport, with segment routing, is designed for cost-effective mobile backhaul. Cisco Network Convergence System routers are used for massive scale, full programmability, simpler cloud integration and service level agreements.

Dr. Hiroshi Nakamura, EVP and Executive GM of R&D Innovation Division, DOCOMO
We are co-creating 5G services by working closely with partners in various industries, and providing these services requires the provision of more flexible and reliable networks.

Jonathan Davidson, SVP and GM, Cisco Service Provide Business
Networks have to be automated, programmable and capable of massive scale. Together, DOCOMO and Cisco mapped out the right path for its 5G transformation with a new intelligent, software-defined network.
