Swisscom announced that it is participating in the Innosuisse 5G-PROLIVE project, which aimed to integrate all audiovisual equipment into a private 5G network at major events.
A demonstration was successfully held on the sidelines of the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne, which took place from January 9 to 22, 2020. It has been shown that a private 5G network offers the opportunity to significantly reduce the audiovisual equipment of sporting events.
OFCOM, ETH Lausanne, SRG, HEIG-VD, the Neuchâtel company NuLink and Swisscom were involved in the demonstration as partners. The aim of the demonstration was to completely do without wired audio-visual installations by using a private 5G network that connected all the production equipment used at the site. By using a radio network, much less material needs to be transported for the installation of the necessary equipment at such an event. This also reduces personnel expenses.
This reduction in personnel and material could therefore result in significant savings and reduce the environmental impact of such events. According to Jacques Bähler, one of the project managers at Swisscom, these tests show that by installing a private 5G antenna and using special SIM cards for this private network, a “wireless event” could be realized in the medium term.
