Smith Micro Software's new version of NetWise® intelligent traffic management solution is being offered as an over-the-top (OTT) smartphone application for both Android and iOS devices. NetWise SmartSpot™ 3.0 acts as a Wi-Fi concierge, providing a simple, streamlined way for end users to locate, prioritize and connect to the Wi-Fi access points.  The solution which is already being used by a largest mass media company in Mexico, facilitates the consumer trend to utilize “Wi-Fi first” for wireless network connectivity, enabling faster, easier consumer onboarding for Wi-Fi providers and lower wireless expenses for enterprises.

Among the NetWise SmartSpot 3.0 features are simple Wi-Fi Discovery and seamless user connection to secure Wi-Fi hotspots, removing the need to launch browsers or enter user credentials multiple times. The app also comes with Mobile Data Management functionality to track data used over cellular versus Wi-Fi networks and automatic connectivity to best quality networks. In addition, it has Smart radio controls on Android, adapting to user behavior and enabling the Wi-Fi radio to turn on/off as needed, to conserve battery life. According to Smithmicro, the NetWise SmartSpot is ideal for Multiple Service Operators (MSOs) and other hotspot providers who want simpler onboarding and a better user experience over Wi-Fi.  It can also be used by enterprises to promote secure, reliable Wi-Fi usage for mobile employees.  For Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) with 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks, NetWise Director™ offers more granular control to handle sophisticated traffic management needs, such as remote policy and software management, preferred roaming, cross-network session persistence, and ANDSF-based policy management, adds SmithMicro.

Wi-Fi as an ‘offload network’ is an outdated concept.   Consumers are increasingly choosing Wi-Fi first for mobile connectivity due to the high cost of cellular data and rapid growth of hotspots, but battery drain, complicated login, questionable security and unpredictable quality are still challenges impeding adoption. NetWise SmartSpot addresses these challenges, acting as a Wi-Fi concierge that helps users find, use, and maintain high-quality Wi-Fi connections.
