Elisa, Finland's biggest mobile operator announced that it has built an ultra-modern mobile network and brought 5G readiness to Tampere, a city in southern Finland.

The construction of a 5G-ready mobile network in Tampere and its surroundings started last year and is now complete.

Base station hardware used in the mobile network was replaced with the latest technology available in the project, which started in September 2017. The network in Tampere and its surroundings is ultrafast, and it enables 1 Gbit/s mobile broadband connections in the centre of Tampere for the first time in Finland.

The most significant advantage of the new, 5G-ready network in Tampere is faster and more reliable data transfer. The speed of the mobile network in Tampere and its surroundings has multiplied with the renewal project. Now it is possible to browse the web at speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s in the centre of Tampere.

For two years, Elisa has been testing technology that will be used in the 5G networks of the future. The update of the network in Tampere is a significant step towards 5G.

A 5G-ready network will form the foundation for the urban services of the future. With the new mobile network, it is possible to develop completely new smart digital services to people living in Tampere and its surroundings. In addition, it creates new business opportunities for companies. Elisa is taking part in the Smart Tampere vitality programme of the City of Tampere and helping to develop the smart city of the future.

The fast network enhances, for instance, the use of digital services, such as sharing different kinds of content and large files, as well as watching videos and videoconferencing. In addition, the network includes functionalities required for the Internet of Things, which enables developing new kinds of services for people living in the area.
