Apple has received an approval from FCC for millimeter wave (mmWave) technology after it filed an application for an experimental license for trials of the technology in two locations near the company's offices in Milpitas, California.

Apple said it will use the license to ensure the compatibility of its iPhone devices with future mobile networks. Apple seeks "to assess cellular link performance in direct path and multipath environments between base station transmitters and receivers using this spectrum". "These assessments will provide engineering data relevant to the operation of devices on wireless carriers’ future 5G networks," the company said in its application.

MmWave technology is designed to enable faster data speeds in mobile networks and improve cellular performance in mobile networks and improve cellular performance in smartphones .
