Japan's TOKAI Communications has selected NEC's virtualized Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) solution and Traffic Management Solution (TMS) for the launch of its MVNO services, 'LIBMO'.

Conventionally, a dedicated hardware has been necessary to enable MVNO gateway (MVNO-GW) functions for connecting a mobile-service provider's network to an MVNO network and the Policy and Charging Rules Functions (PCRF), which manage network service quality.

NEC said its vMVNO solution enables this to be achieved with just a general-purpose server and software by utilizing Software Defined Networking (SDN)/Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). TMS, which controls the communication bandwidth and communication traffic, is also necessary to provide the MVNO service.Through these solutions, TOKAI Communications has achieved a reduction in equipment procurement costs and installation space, claims the company.

In addition, it is possible to flexibly reduce service operating costs by changing the network security or controlling the bandwidth and traffic volume of communications. Moreover, the period required for verifying functions has been reduced by providing the necessary functions in a unified system.

Shigeru Okuya, GM of SDN/NFV Division, NEC
We are very pleased that NEC's vMVNO solution and TMS have contributed to the successful creation of the mobile services provided by TOKAI Communications Corporation. Going forward, we will continue to contribute to the establishment of advanced communications services by mobile-service providers through the global provision of innovative new SDN/NFV solutions, including vMVNO solutions.
