According to a newly published forecast report by the Dell’Oro Group, C-RAN configured macro and small cell RAN market is forecast to reach USD5 billion in the next five years, helping operators to meet the data needs of the future while ensuring capital intensities remain intact. The C-RAN is expected to provide the additional capacity required when there is a surge in demand for mobile data from certain points in the network due to events and occasions that see traffic peaking in venues such as stadiums, concert halls, train stations, parks and convention centres.

Dell-Oro in its statement said that for the duration of the forecast, the C-RAN market will be driven primarily by the centralized and Metro C-RAN fronthaul and radio equipment. The market research firm, however played down the impact of C-RAN in the near-term, though it foresees the technology carrying significant potential in the long-term. The research firm added that small cell configured C-RAN networks are expected to account for a significant portion of total C-RAN spending throughout the forecast period.

While the C-RAN architecture will to some degree be challenged by the fact that the cost of computing tends to decline at a faster pace than the cost of transporting data, there will still be a viable business case for C-RAN as cell site OPEX remains significant.
