Google and Apigee, an API(Application Programming Interface) management platform provider has entered into an agreement under which Google will acquire Apigee for a total value of approximately $625 million. San Jose-based Apigee's software helps companies' digital services interact with apps used by customers that include leading US operator, AT&T.
Diane Greene, Senior Vice President, Google Enterprise Cloud Business, wrote in a blog post, "Today, we’re excited to announce that Google has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Apigee, a provider of application programming interface (API) management. APIs — the mechanism developers use to interface and integrate with outside apps and services — are vital for how business gets done today in the fast-growing digital and mobile marketplace. They're the hubs through which companies, partners and customers interact, whether it's a small business applying online for a loan or a point of sale system sending your warranty information to the manufacturer."

APIs allow the company’s backend services to talk to the mobile and web-based apps used by their customers and partners. Instead of the doctor phoning a prescription into the pharmacy, they can use an app that talks to the pharmacy through an API. Apigee easily enables this by providing a comprehensive API platform that supports secure, stable, multi-language, dev, test, publish and analytics capabilities.
