Intel recently announced that it is acquiring German drone startup, Ascending Technologies which the company says makes the 'best-in-class' auto-pilot software and algorithms for drones. With Ascending Technologies, Intel aims to gain expertise and technology to accelerate the deployment of Intel RealSense into the fast growing drone market segment. Drones, also referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are quickly emerging as an important computing platform of the future, said Intel.
Intel said in a blog post that it is "positioning itself at the forefront of this opportunity to increasingly integrate the computing, communications, sensor and cloud technology required to make drones smarter and more connected."
The chip maker was earlier deploying Ascending Technologies’ sense-and-avoid algorithms into its RealSense technology’s real-time depth-sensing capability. Together, these technologies can, among other things, improve drone safety – helping them avoid obstacles and collisions.
