Counterpoint Technology Market Research, an independent market research and consulting firm published its Q2 2014 Market Monitor reports, highlighting key trends from the mobile market in China for the second quarter of this year. According to Counterpoint, China makes up more than a third of global smartphone shipment volume compared to a share of 25% two years ago and smartphones make up 94% of total phone shipments in China. The country is also currently the second largest market for LTE smartphones based on the volumes shipped, taking up a share of 25% of total LTE phones shipments globally. China is expected to surpass the top LTE smartphone market, the United States in the second half of this year.
Globally, Counterpoint said that smartphone shipment reached its highest peak with more than 300 million units shipped in the second quarter of this year. These figures make up 70% of all mobile phones shipped during the period.
Counterpoint also pointed to the rise of OEMs in the smartphone space, especially in China. The country is seeing players such as Coolpad taking over world giants Samsung and Apple in the LTE smartphone segment. Having said that, Counterpoint added that there are more than 250 LTE models being sold in China and named Media Tek, Lenovo and Xiaomi as some of the top brands that the market will be watching in the near future.
