South African operator, Cell C becomes amongst the first operators in South Africa to launch WiFi Calling service, following months of testing. The operator will launch the service to its entire customer base on the first of October with the AG Style handset, offering the service to both contract and prepaid customers. It will also add more devices to the service later in the month, including the AG Shine, ZTE V6 and ZTE V6 Lite handsets with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge to follow in November. According to Cell C, it has worked with leading vendors such as Atos, Huawei and Lyndrasoft on the project.

In addition to voice service, with WiFi Calling, customers can also use USSD, or the standard messaging service to send text messages.

Cell C said that international travelers will reap great benefits from this service, as they will be able to use a hotel Wi-Fi or any Wi-Fi hotspot to make calls at their local Cell C tariff plan rates.

Jose Dos Santos, Cell C CEO
With thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots nationally and millions more internationally, this service will really provide customers with an affordable mobile service anywhere in the world. Whether you are in a basement or find yourself in an area with no cellular coverage, Wi-Fi access will enable you to still receive a full mobile experience, including voice, USSD self service and SMS.
