Vodacom South Africa Launches VoLTE Calling

Vodacom South Africa becomes the first mobile operator in South Africa to launch voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service. The introduction of the service will begin with contract subscribers with Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge devices given access to VoLTE which comes with faster call connection times as well as high definition call quality. To enable the service, customers with compatible handsets will be running a free software update on their devices. The service, which does not require any additional application will not be charging customers any additional cost, said Vodacom.

While Vodacom is working to introduce more phones with VoLTE support in the next few months, users on other 4G/LTE phones will be switched to the 2G or 3G signal when a user places or receives a call.

Vodacom says it originally demonstrated VoLTE in action on its network in September 2014, but commercial launch has been delayed by a lack of compatible smartphones.

Within the next month, VoLTE functionality will be added to additional devices, and we expect usage will grow rapidly as more and more handset manufacturers include the functionality,” says chief technology officer Andries Delport in a statement.
