UAE-based telecom giant, Etisalat this week announced the launch of the UAE’s first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service to offer high-definition(HD) voice service and and rich-media services to its prepaid and post-paid mobile customers. The HD calls will be charged the same as any ordinary call and will initially work on Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The Operator plans to introduce more smartphones over the coming months.

With the new service, Etisalat aims to counter the appeal of chat apps such as Skype, Facebook and Google Hangouts by offering a “high-definition" version of voice and video calls natively on user's handsets. The new VoLTE service is based on SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) that will reduce call set up time significantly as compared to the current call set-up time, and will be provided over Etisalat's 4G LTE network.

Etisalat said that 95% of its network across the UAE is now covered with 4G LTE, with its 4G+ technology being available in certain locations across the country.

In addition, given the multi-tasking needs of the UAE’s smartphone consumers, Etisalat’s top priority is to improve the customer’s overall experience with high-quality services. We are constantly working to deliver the most innovative services to its customers and are excited to be the first in the UAE to launch VoLTE services that will offer our customers better quality of calls through improved network performance.
