The National Broadband Network (NBN) company has officially opened its first Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) cable infrastructure, with the service now available in the Queensland suburb of Redcliffe. The service which offers download speeds of up to 100Mbps, will be made available at the entire suburb to Retail Service Providers(RFS) to offer services to end users. Redcliffe was a trial site for the NBN HFC network that involved four RSPs and 300 homes.

NBN inherited the HFC pay-TV networks from Telstra and Optus where the ownership of the networks was transferred to NBN under an agreement with the two operators in 2014.

NBN said that it now has 18,800 premises Ready for Service (RFS) and plans to RFS a total of 875,000 HFC premises by June 2017. It also targets to have 200,000 of those end-user premises activated during the period.
