Telecom Italia(TIM) announced that it will be offering a pilot of 1Gbps Fiber-based broadband service in Milan starting on the first of June. The new FTTH (Fiber To The Home) network is designed to provide a super-fast connection up to 1000 MB per second in download and 100 MB in upload.

Only the first 3,000 customers in the city will be able to enjoy the pilot service, according to TIM. The city of Milan is part of TIM's national plan of FTTH technology cabling which aims to reach over 3.5 million homes by 2018.

With the ultra-high speed broadband service, customers can enjoy high quality video content such as the 4K. It also enables streaming of high quality multimedia content concurrently on multiple devices - smartphones, tablets and smart TVs. Businesses in the meantime, can access a wide range of professional solutions that leverage on a higher bandwidth such as telepresence, video surveillance and cloud computing services.

The 1Gbps service will also be key for local authorities to implement smart city projects, including systems for security and monitoring, info-mobility and sensor networks for environmental telemonitoring.

Roberto Opilio, Head of Technology at TIM
TIM's new technological primacy is the result of strong investments in ultrabroadband amounting to over 4.5 billion euros in the three-year period 2016-2018, thereby demonstrating that our commitment to create innovative infrastructure is concrete. The goal is to reach 84% of homes with fiber optics - of which 20% also in FTTH technology - and to have 98% mobile ultrabroadband coverage by the end of 2018.
