Telenor announced today that, together with Vodafone, it has set a new global IPX benchmark with five separate services running live across a single IPX interconnect. The initial 4G signaling service launched in 2014 has been expanded to now include 2G/3G signaling, direct voice, data roaming services, and finally SMS traffic, all interconnected via the joint IPX capabilities.

IPX interconnect creates a high quality, highly secure ecosystem to support a commercially sustainable transition to IP. Mobile, fixed and cable operators, over-the-top players (OTT), content and application service providers can all use the same system architecture to bring new services to market quicker, more competitively and with guaranteed quality. It allows multiple services to be delivered over existing, privately managed IP/MPLS networks, via a single connection.

Telenor's and Vodafone's IPX interconnect platforms will be supporting the rapid evolution in 4G services while enabling increased 4G data roaming, said the Operators. In addition, over 460+ million Vodafone and over 200 million Telenor subscribers will benefit from improved quality, because all services are directly exchanged between the companies. The platform will also be essential in delivering VoLTE interworking and VoLTE roaming end to end, the companies added.

According to both Operators, the IPX platforms has been developed in full compliance with GSMA and i3Forum IPX guidelines, which is critical to secure full interoperability on all current and future services.

Ronny Johnsen, CMO of Global Wholesale, the international wholesale unit of Telenor
Both Telenor and Vodafone are leading players in rolling out 4G in their local markets. This direct IPX interconnect between our mobile groups secures a high service quality with a roam like home customer experience for all Telenor and Vodafone subscribers.

Fred Schepens, SVP Voice at Vodafone Carrier Services
Telenor was one of the first carriers to understand and embrace the opportunities that multiple services delivered via a single connection gives.
