Netflix announced a new feature to the updated Netflix app on iOS or Android that will enable subscribers to be able to adjust the quality of the video they watch and hence control the amount of mobile data that is consumed. Netflix aims to give users more control and greater choice in managing their data usage to help avoid exceeding data caps and incurring overage fees.

Eddy Wu, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix said that, "As we have launched Netflix around the world, we have seen big differences in how much people are streaming on smartphones and what kinds of mobile data plans they have. Today, we are offering a new tool to help you better control how much data you use when streaming on cellular networks".

Users can set their cellular data usage by selecting “App Settings” from the menu, and pick “Cellular Data Usage.”, where they can switch off the automatic default and select a higher or lower data usage settings. According to Netflix, the default setting will enable users to stream about 3 hours of TV shows and movies per gigabyte of data, which amounts to speeds of 600 Kbps.
