Vodafone Netherlands has upgraded its core network leveraging Ericsson's Network Function Virtualization(NFV)-based IMS and EPC components to enable VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling to provide superior voice and video communication services to its customers. Ericsson claims that the deployment marks the first cloud-based and fully virtualized network in the country to support these services.
The complete cloud-based solution also includes Virtual Network Functions (VNF) for policy control and application server domain.
The end-to-end VoLTE and Wi-fi Calling overlay network includes VNFs for the Ericsson IP Multimedia Subsystem with Ericsson Multimedia Telephony Application Server, Ericsson Call Session Control Function, Ericsson Evolved Packet Core with Ericsson Evolved Packet Gateway, Ericsson Wi-Fi Mobility Gateway and other Ericsson control and authentication functions.
