In a move believed to counter T-Mobile's new roaming plan to Mexico & Canada, Sprint on Monday unveiled its Open World add-on plan, which offers free calling and texting from the US to these two countries and other Latin American countries namely Dominican Republic, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay.

Last month, T-Mobile launched its 'Mobile Without Borders initiative' that offers calls to Mexico and Canada at no extra charge and dropped roaming charges for voice and data usage within those countries for subscribers of its Simple Choice postpaid and prepaid plan.

On its new plan, Sprint, apart from offering free calling and texting, is also offering an extra 1GB of free data usage on top of the monthly data allocation, for usage in Mexico and Canada. In addition, as part of the Open World promotion, Sprint will be offering a 5 cents/minute to Dominican Republic and more than 180 countries. Under the plan, subscribers visiting Europe or Asia will also enjoy free texts, but calls will be charged at 20 cents per minute and data is still at $30 per GB (in select locations).

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure
We’re opening up the world and breaking down borders so more Sprint customers can stay in touch with the people who are important to them. Sprint is making it easier for our customers to connect without roaming charges or excessive fees for calls or texts.
