Vodafone India Starts 4G Trials in Selected Areas

Vodafone India has started its 4G LTE trials in selected areas as its data revenue continues to post strong growth. The Operator's data revenue increased 65 percent during the second quarter of this year.

Vodafone India's move is also seen as a response to the intensifying competition especially with the entrance of newcomer, Reliance Jio Infocomm, into the Indian 4G market whose services are expected to be launched nationwide by end of this year. At the same time, Bharti Airtel, India's biggest Operator has been expanding its 4G footprint with rollouts across the country.

Vodafone India said in a statement that it now has 22 million 3G customers compared to 10 million a year ago. The Operator's smartphone penetration is now 26 percent across the country and 47 percent in four major metro circles. The company also saw an addition of 3.1 million new data customers in the last quarter, bringing the total to 66.8 million.

Through Project Spring, an investment programme aimed at accelerating and extending Vodafone India's strategy on data, enterprise and emerging markets, the Operator has achieved 91% 3G outdoor population coverage in targeted urban areas in the country.

Vodafone India is part of the Vodafone Group which has 24.1 million 4G customers across 18 markets and 4G accounts for 35 percent of data traffic in European markets.

Vittorio Colao, Group Chief Executive, Vodafone
Our emerging markets have maintained their strong momentum and more of our European businesses are returning to growth, as customer demand for 4G and data takes off.
