This week saw Malaysia's third largest mobile operator, Digi Telecommunications introducing basic mobile internet plan with 1GB monthly data cap for RM25 (that's approximetly US$7), including access to its 4G network. The move is in line with the Malaysian Government’s call for lower broadband charges that aims to drive wider internet adoption among more Malaysians nationwide, said the operator in a statement. The 'Broadband 25' plan which is available for both prepaid and postpaid customers, offers Digi's existing  postpaid customers a special rate of RM20.

The offer by Digi is suited for mobile internet users whose consumption is light yet who require the quota to be applicable over a longer tenure which is often not the case for short term passes that offer similar data allocation. This will also come in handy for those who use apps that have built-in data compression capabilities such as the Facebook mobile app or browsers such as Opera mini, Amazon Silk and Google mobile browser. Opera for example, claims that their mobile browser uses up to 90 percent less data than other browsers.  Early last year, Opera has also introduced another app, the Opera Max that can compress data from browsers as well as from other apps, including apps providing streaming video content.

But unlike most mobile internet plans out there that allow users to continue surfing after users exceed their quota threshold on throttled down speeds, Digi's new plan requires users to top up for continued access.

Digi's Chief Marketing Officer, Christian Thranet
Our aspiration of delivering Internet For All is rooted on the principle of affordable access for broadband and mobile internet services. DiGi's basic broadband plan today gives customers access to quality internet service for less than RM1 a day.
