Alcatel-Lucent is to provide Wind Telecomunicazioni, the third largest mobile operator in Italy with over 22 million subscribers, with content delivery network technology to support the launch of new video and TV services for its fixed and mobile subscribers. Wind offers integrated services for mobile and fixed  telephony and is the major alternative operator in the fixed telephony market, with over 3 million subscribers.

The project will see Alcatel-Lucent delivering its Velocix 7810 Digital Media Delivery Platform, the market leading on-net Content Delivery Network system, used by some of the largest operators in the world, including Telus, Oi and Time Warner Cable, among others. According to Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), the provision of its Velocix Content Delivery Network platform will enable Wind’s customers to manage video traffic on its network, providing an optimized experience for customers regardless of the device they use to access content. It added that the Velocix platform will provide Wind with the efficiency and agility to manage video traffic as its network grows to accommodate additional demand and will help position Wind as a key player in the distribution of video content in Italy, and will enable it to bring new services to market.
