Telefónica Germany via its O2 brand is introducing Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) to its 4G subcribers that provides High Definition (HD) call quality as well as shorter call setup times. VoLTE also promises reduction in battery consumption of smartphones, as it runs significantly less network searches.
The new technology has been made available throughout the entire O2 LTE network and can be accessed initially via the Samsung Galaxy S5. The operator is already in the process of intrducing Nokia Lumia 830 and 640, as well as the Sony Xperia Z3 to support the service. At the same time, Telefónica is working with phone manufacturers to activate smartphone models with firmware that is compatible with its VoLTE.
The VoLTE service can automatically switch calls from the LTE network to the GSM or UMTS networks. Telefónica Germany is planning to increase the current LTE network coverage of around 62 percent of the population to reach an outdoor LTE coverage of up to 90 percent of the population by end of 2016.
