Following the controversial move by Bharti Airtel to not include data used for OTT voice applications under its normal data packages but instead charge the usage on these applications separately using standard or pay-as-you-go (PAYG) rates, the company has now issued an update saying that it is holding back the introduction of VoIP data packages pending the issuance of a consultative paper on VoIP services by the Telecom Regulatory of India (TRAI). According to new sources, Bharti Airtel's said in its statement that "In view of news reports that a consultation paper will be issued shortly by (telecom regulator) TRAI on issues relating to services offered by over-the-top (OTT) players including VOIP, we have decided not to implement our proposed launch of VoIP packs."
The operator also added that "We have no doubt that as a result of the consultation process, a balanced outcome would emerge that would not only protect the interests of all stakeholders and viability of this important sector but would also encourage the much-needed investments in spectrum and roll out of data networks to fulfil the objective of digital India."
Bharti Airtel's separate charging for OTT voice applications stems from mobile operators' response to the challenge faced by mobile operators worldwide as a large chunk of their voice and SMS revenues were lost to these applications which include the likes of Skype, Viber and Line.
