Ford Motor Company, the global auto-maker based in Dearborn, Michigan and Automatic Labs, provider of connected car solutions are collaborating to provide enhanced connected car services for Ford and Lincoln vehicle owners. At present, Ford offers connectivity in its vehicles via its Ford SYNC platfrom that allows drivers to make calls, listen to music and get directions via its navigation feature.

With the collaboration, Ford drivers will be able to use Automatic's mobile apps and its special device to connect their smartphones to the vehicle's onboard computer and access new services including tracking of the car's location. Automatic also enables Ford drivers to use Apple's Siri personal assistant service, which they can access and navigate using strategically placed buttons in the vehicle. Another killer application that users can access is the If This Then That (IFTT) that automates actions using the Internet. In the M2M and Internet-of-Things (IoT) space, the IFTT will enable drivers to send messages to remotely operating home appliances, enabling drivers to manage their other connected devices/machines while driving.

The existing Automatic device is available for sale at  Apple Stores, Best Buy, and Amazon for $99.95 with no ongoing service fees. The new Ford Automatic integration will be available by downloading the latest version of the Automatic iOS app in coming weeks.

"Ford’s powerful in-car technology makes working with Ford highly valuable for us. Ford’s interface—coupled with Automatic’s connected services platform—enables us to bring customized one-touch applications to Ford drivers that go beyond the capabilities of either technology on its own.”

“Automatic exists to help people drive safer and smarter. We’re thrilled to be working with Ford to improve the overall driving experience by connecting our shared customers and their cars to the Internet.”

-        Thejo Kote, CEO, Automatic

"Ford is always looking for new ways, including working with other innovative companies, to improve our customers’ experience. Teaming up with Automatic was the natural choice given their connected car technology and focus on enhancing the driving experience.”

-        Don Butler, executive director, Connected Vehicle and Services, Ford
