Opera announced that it is discontinuing Opera Max, the app that allowed users to manage and reduce data usage across their Android mobile phone applications.

Opera Max which was initially released in 2014, "had a substantially different value proposition than our browser products, and represented a different focus for Opera. We, therefore, focus on our browsers and other upcoming services," said the company in a blog post.

Launched in 2014, the company introduced Opera Max in Africa in 2016 to help users to manage and save data on streaming video, audio and photo-rich apps through both mobile and Wi-Fi connections. Opera also has partnered with a number of  device makers globally to preinstall Opera Max on selected phone modeles, including its partnershp with Samsung in Indonesia and with the leading Vietnamese smartphone brand Mobiistar.

The Opera Max service will remain intact for existing users for a period of time but the servers that power it will likely go offline in the near future. It has also been delisted from the Google Play store catalog.
