Ireland’s eir announced the launch of its WiFi Calling service which is expected to enable around 144,000 eir mobile and Meteor mobile subscribers to make and receive calls and texts even when outside of mobile network coverage.

This new service will allow eir and Meteor customers to seamlessly switch between using mobile signal and WiFi signal while making voice calls.

The service will be available to both new and existing post-paid customers on selected plans and will be supported initially on the Samsung Galaxy S6, s6 Edge, S7 and S7 Edge and S8 and S8 Plus handsets. It will be also work on Apple’s iPhone 5C and any newer iPhone model.

eir’s WiFi Calling is built into customer handsets, making it easy for them to access all their existing contacts without requiring a separate app, and the service requires only that a customer switch on the relevant setting once the handset software is updated.

Sinead Morrissey, Head of Mobile Product, eir
Our WiFi Calling service is a progressive leap forward in our ambition to bring seamless connectivity to our customers – and a trailblazing moment for eir as the first operator in Ireland to introduce the service. This service brings a greatly improved customer experience, enabling the peace of mind to make calls from wherever it suits.
